Wood shavings, river currents, garden soil, and time with family—
the spaces where I recharge and stay grounded.
Outside of higher education, I’m happiest working with wood, shooting target archery, or standing in a river attempting (with mixed success) to catch fish. In recent years I’ve added gardening to my list of hobbies, and—as an avid do-it-yourselfer—I’m rarely without a project somewhere around the house or yard. I love canoeing and kayaking with my family, and our home is run by two affectionate dogs convinced they’re in charge. I’m also enjoying being a grandfather to two young girls, which has added a whole new dimension of joy and perspective to my life. Since 2018, I’ve been a member of the Christiansburg Kiwanis Club (http://www.christiansburgkiwanis.com/home.html), an organization that raises about $80,000 annually to support the needs of children in our area. These pursuits—both personal and community-focused—keep me grounded, creative, and connected, reminding me that a meaningful career is sustained by an intentional life outside of work. I’ve included a slideshow on this page that brings together many of these moments and activities.
